On 8 September 1969 Jamaica switched to dollars and cents, and among the first decimal notes was the 1 dollar with the portrait of Sir Alexander Bustamante.
Bustamante was the first Prime Minister of independent Jamaica, in office from 6 August 1962 to 23 February 1967, and is a National Hero of the country. His portrait on the lowest dollar note lasted for more than twenty years.
This note is dated 1990, the last date of its type, issued from 1985. By 1990 the one-dollar note had been replaced by a coin, so this piece captures the end of the paper dollar in Jamaica.
For a Jamaica collection this is the lowest dollar denomination to leave paper circulation, and for a «notes replaced by coins» theme it is a clear example of that change. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
